Cold Rolled

(COIL/SHEET/SLIT SIZES)

Cold-rolled steel is steel that has been processed at room temperature (below its recrystallization temperature) to improve its surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical properties. This process results in a smoother, stronger, and more dimensionally precise material compared to hot-rolled steel.

Key characteristics of cold-rolled steel:

  • Improved Surface Finish: Cold rolling eliminates surface imperfections and creates a smoother, more appealing surface finish.
  • Enhanced Dimensional Accuracy: The process allows for tighter tolerances and more precise dimensions compared to hot-rolled steel.
  • Increased Strength and Hardness: Cold working can increase the strength and hardness of the steel.
  • Reduced Ductility: Cold rolling can make the steel less ductile (malleable).
  • Potential for Brittle Behavior: Due to cold working, the steel can become brittle and may require annealing to recover ductility.

Cold Rolling Process:

  1. 1. Starting Material:

Cold-rolled steel is typically made from hot-rolled steel that has been cooled and pickled (cleaned).

  1. 2. Cold Rolling:

The steel is then passed through rollers at room temperature, reducing its thickness and improving its surface finish.

  1. 3. Annealing (Optional):

If needed, the steel can be annealed to relieve stress and improve ductility.

  1. 4. Further Processing:

Cold-rolled steel can be further processed, such as galvanizing, to enhance its properties.

Common Applications:

  • Construction: Structural components, framing, and cladding.
  • Automotive: Body panels, chassis components, and other parts.
  • Appliances: Refrigerator casings, washing machine drums, and other components.
  • Furniture: Frames and other structural elements.
  • Consumer Goods: A wide range of products where a smooth, strong, and dimensionally accurate material is needed.

Benefits of using cold-rolled steel:

  • Superior surface quality: Ideal for applications where appearance is important.
  • Tighter dimensional tolerances: Allows for more precise manufacturing.
  • Enhanced strength and durability: Suitable for structural applications.
  • Versatile and widely used: Suitable for a broad range of industries.
