Galvanized steel is a steel that has a protective zinc coating on its outer surface. The zinc is used to increase the steel’s corrosion resistance and is applied most commonly by hot dipping the steel into molten zinc. The zinc can also be annealed after the hot dipping process or electroplated to the steel.

Properties

• Corrosion Resistance: The primary advantage, derived from the zinc coating, which acts as a barrier and sacrificially corrodes before the underlying steel.
• Durability and Longevity: The zinc coating significantly extends the lifespan of steel, potentially lasting for decades, even in harsh environments.
• Strength: The zinc coating does not significantly alter the inherent strength of the base steel.
• Surface Appearance: Galvanized steel typically has a matte gray appearance, sometimes with a crystalline pattern called “spangle”.
• Hardness: The zinc coating is slightly softer than the steel itself but still offers good resistance to surface wear.
• Recyclability: Both the steel and the zinc coating can be recycled, making it a sustainable option.
